Inspect Cords and Plugs Regularly
Frayed, cracked, or damaged electrical cords are a serious fire hazard. Check all appliance cords regularly for signs of wear, especially near the plug and where the cord enters the appliance. Replace any damaged cords immediately rather than using electrical tape as a temporary fix.
Never Overload Power Outlets
Plugging too many devices into a single outlet or power strip can cause overheating, which may lead to electrical fires. Use one high-wattage appliance per outlet and avoid daisy-chaining multiple power strips together. If you frequently need more outlets, have an electrician install additional ones.
Never DIY Electrical Panel or Wiring Work
Working on your home's electrical panel, circuit breakers, or internal wiring without proper training and licensing is extremely dangerous and often illegal. Incorrect wiring can cause fires, electrocution, and damage to your home's electrical system. Always hire a licensed electrician for any work beyond simple tasks like changing a light bulb or resetting a tripped breaker.
Recognize the Warning Signs of Electrical Fire
Be alert for signs that could indicate an electrical fire risk: frequently tripping circuit breakers, flickering lights, buzzing or sizzling sounds from outlets, discolored or warm wall plates, a burning smell with no identifiable source, or sparks when plugging in appliances. If you notice any of these signs, stop using the outlet immediately and call a licensed electrician.
Have a Fire Extinguisher Accessible
Keep at least one fire extinguisher on each floor of your home, and make sure everyone in the household knows where they are and how to use them. For electrical fires, use a Class C or ABC extinguisher. Never use water on an electrical fire, as water conducts electricity and can make the situation much worse. Check the pressure gauge monthly.
Install Smoke Detectors on Every Floor
Smoke detectors are your first line of defense against electrical fires. Install at least one smoke detector on every floor of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. Test detectors monthly by pressing the test button, replace batteries at least once a year, and replace the entire unit every 10 years.
Keep Cords Out of Children's Reach
Dangling cords from appliances, lamps, and blinds are a strangulation and electrocution hazard for young children. Use cord management clips to secure cords along walls and behind furniture. Shorten excess cord length using cord wraps and avoid using extension cords in areas where children play. Teach older children about the dangers of pulling on cords.
Cover All Unused Outlets
Young children are naturally curious and may try to insert small objects into electrical outlets, which can cause serious electric shock. Install tamper-resistant outlet covers or safety plugs on every unused outlet in your home, especially in rooms where children play. Tamper-resistant receptacles are the safest option as they have built-in shutters that prevent objects from being inserted.
Keep Heating Equipment Away from Flammable Items
Space heaters, radiators, and other portable heating devices should be placed at least 3 feet away from curtains, bedding, furniture, and other flammable materials. Never drape clothing over heaters to dry and always place portable heaters on flat, stable surfaces. Turn them off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
Clean the Dryer Lint Trap Every Load
A clogged lint trap is one of the top causes of house fires. Remove lint from the dryer filter before or after every load. Additionally, have the dryer vent duct professionally cleaned at least once a year to remove lint buildup that accumulates in the ductwork, which restricts airflow and creates a serious fire hazard.
Never Leave Cooking Appliances Unattended
Unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires. Always stay in the kitchen when using the stovetop, and check on food regularly when using the oven. If you need to leave, turn off the burners or set a timer as a reminder. Keep flammable items like towels, paper, and curtains away from cooking surfaces.
Keep Appliances Away from Water
Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Keep countertop appliances like toasters, blenders, and coffee makers away from the sink and any water sources. If an appliance falls into water, do not reach in to retrieve it. Unplug it first, or turn off power at the breaker before touching it.
Use Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)
AFCIs are circuit breakers that detect dangerous electrical arcs, which are a leading cause of house fires, and shut off power before a fire can start. They are now required by building codes in most living areas of new homes. If your home does not have AFCI protection, consider having an electrician install AFCI breakers in your panel, especially for bedrooms and living rooms.
Upgrade Old or Outdated Wiring
Homes built before 1970 may have outdated wiring such as knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring that was not designed for modern electrical loads. These older systems are more prone to overheating and fires. If you live in an older home, have a licensed electrician inspect your wiring and recommend upgrades. Signs of outdated wiring include frequently blown fuses and warm or discolored outlets.
Know Your Electrical Panel
Every household member should know where the main electrical panel is located and how to shut off power in an emergency. Label each circuit breaker clearly so you know which breaker controls which area of the house. Keep the area around the panel clear and accessible at all times. If your panel uses fuses instead of breakers, consider upgrading for improved safety.
Create and Practice a Fire Escape Plan
Every household should have a fire escape plan with two exits from every room. Practice the plan with all family members at least twice a year. Designate a meeting point outside the home where everyone gathers after evacuating. Make sure children know how to escape on their own and that everyone knows to get out first and call for help second.
Supervise Children Around Kitchen Appliances
Children should never be left unsupervised around kitchen appliances like blenders, toasters, and microwaves. Keep small appliances unplugged and stored away when not in use so children cannot accidentally turn them on. As children get older, teach them to use kitchen appliances safely under adult supervision before allowing them to use appliances independently.
Teach Children About Electrical Safety Early
Start teaching children about electrical safety as soon as they are old enough to understand basic instructions. Explain that water and electricity never mix, that they should never touch outlets or cords with wet hands, and that they should tell an adult immediately if they see a damaged cord or sparking outlet. Make electrical safety a regular conversation topic.
Be Careful with Electric Lawn Equipment
When using electric lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, or leaf blowers, always check the cord for damage before each use. Keep cords away from the cutting path and use a GFCI outlet. Never use electric outdoor equipment in wet conditions, as moisture increases the risk of electric shock. Store all electric tools indoors when not in use.
Keep Outdoor Outlets Covered
Outdoor electrical outlets should have weatherproof covers, often called in-use covers or bubble covers, that protect them from rain, snow, and debris even when a cord is plugged in. Inspect covers regularly to make sure they close properly and replace any that are cracked or broken. Water in an unprotected outlet can cause shocks or short circuits.
Use Outdoor-Rated Extension Cords Outside
Indoor extension cords are not designed to handle moisture, temperature changes, or UV exposure. Always use extension cords specifically rated for outdoor use when powering equipment outside. These cords have heavier insulation and are designed to resist weather conditions. Never run indoor cords through windows or under doors to reach outdoor areas.
Unplug Electronics During Storms
Lightning strikes can send powerful surges through power lines that even surge protectors may not fully handle. During severe thunderstorms, unplug sensitive and expensive electronics like computers, TVs, and routers. This is the only guaranteed way to protect them from lightning-induced power surges.
Use Correct Chargers for Your Devices
Always use the charger that came with your device or a certified replacement. Cheap, uncertified chargers may not have proper safety features and can overheat, damage your battery, or cause electrical fires. Look for safety certifications like UL or ETL on replacement chargers and avoid charging devices on soft surfaces like beds or couches.
Use Surge Protectors for Sensitive Electronics
Computers, televisions, gaming consoles, and other sensitive electronics can be damaged or destroyed by power surges caused by lightning or power grid fluctuations. Always plug these devices into surge protectors, not regular power strips. Replace surge protectors every 2 to 3 years, as their protective components wear out over time.
Replace HVAC Filters on Schedule
Dirty air filters force your heating and cooling system to work much harder, increasing energy consumption and the risk of overheating. Replace disposable filters every 1 to 3 months, or clean reusable filters according to the manufacturer's instructions. A clean filter also improves indoor air quality and extends the life of your system.
Never Run Laundry Appliances When Away
Avoid running your washer or dryer while you are asleep or away from home. If a malfunction occurs, such as a leak or overheating, being present allows you to respond quickly and prevent damage or fire. Set your laundry schedule so machines run while you are home and awake.
Check Washing Machine Hoses Regularly
Rubber washing machine hoses can crack, bulge, or burst over time, causing significant water damage. Inspect hoses every few months for signs of wear and replace them every 3 to 5 years. Consider upgrading to stainless steel braided hoses, which are more durable and resistant to bursting.
Clean Your Oven and Stovetop Regularly
Grease and food buildup inside ovens and on stovetops can ignite and cause kitchen fires. Clean spills as soon as they happen and do a deep clean of your oven at least once a month. Never line the bottom of your oven with aluminum foil, as it can cause overheating and block airflow.
Always Unplug Before Cleaning

Overheating shortens the lifespan of electronic components and can create a fire hazard in extreme cases.
Do Not Block Vents and Registers
Blocking air vents with furniture, rugs, or other items restricts airflow, making your system work harder and increasing fire risk. Ensure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Closing too many vents can also create pressure imbalances in your ductwork, leading to leaks and reduced efficiency.
Schedule Annual HVAC Maintenance
Professional maintenance helps catch potential electrical issues, refrigerant leaks, and worn components before they become dangerous or expensive to repair. Have your heating system serviced in the fall and your cooling system in the spring. Regular maintenance keeps your system running efficiently and can reduce energy bills by 10 to 25 percent.
Do Not Overload Your Washing Machine
Overloading a washing machine forces the motor to work harder, which can lead to overheating and premature wear. Follow the manufacturer's load capacity guidelines. An overloaded machine also does not clean clothes effectively and can become unbalanced during the spin cycle, potentially causing damage to the machine.
Maintain Your Refrigerator Coils
